Mission and Vision Statement

The Jay & Diane Zidell Charitable Foundation is a manifestation of three generations of effort. Building on the successes of the past and rooted in an inherited spirit of generosity, the Foundation serves as a vehicle to do good in our community for many generations to come.

We envision a future wherein:

  • There is a strong, vibrant Jewish community in Portland and beyond

  • Everyone can meet their basic needs and has the tools necessary to thrive

  • Research has led to cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases

  • Arts and culture organizations are thriving, contributing to a dynamic and enjoyable city

  • We are working closely with community to re-imagine a better future together

We will accomplish this by focusing on three pillars of giving:

  1. Wellness: supporting access to human services and progress in health & medical research

  2. Community Enrichment: supporting projects centered on education, arts and culture

  3. Jewish Heritage: supporting multi-generational engagement and community building

Our giving is rooted in the following values:

  • Upholding the Jewish value of tzedakah, giving strategically and with empathy to build self-sufficiency and a more just society.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships in the community, leading to long-standing partnerships and a deep understanding of needs and impacts.

  • Giving both kindly and wisely, both addressing immediate needs and laying the groundwork for long-term systems change.

  • Remaining open to new needs and changing conditions, while being mindful to honor the legacies of those who helped us grow.
